TURRIALBA, A WONDERFUL LAND WITH REMAINS OF PRE HISPANIC HISTORY

The incredible city of Turrialba, belonging to the province of Cartago, is located in the valley that forms the Turrialba River at the east of the city of Cartago about 67 kilometers far from the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose.

This magical and mysterious city, houses the remains of a very old pre-Columbian society dating back approximately 800 AD, which apparently disappeared mysteriously and leaving no trace at all in about 1,400 AD, leaving the ruins that are today called Guayabo National Monument. It is a place of great interest where, apart from learning about archeology and pre-Columbian architecture, the tourists can breathe fresh air, as well as enjoy unrivaled and stunning landscapes, with the Turrialba volcano in sight and green tones of “pura vida” on the other hand. In the ruins of the Guayabo National Monument, the tourists can be transported to pre-Hispanic times through a large causeway of about 100 meters in length, where they can see and feel the foundations of indigenous constructions of approximately 30 meters high, plus an aqueduct that continues in activity and that dazzles to the engineers. This is a land immensely beautiful and worth to be visited, activities such as mountain biking, canopy and rafting, can be practiced, in addition that very close to the city downtown, there is a great waterfall where canyoning is a practice that is worth living at least once.

There are three areas of life: very humid tropical forest, humid premontane forest and humid tropical forest. It includes eight types of major associations (trees, shrubs and herbs) and three minor associations (herbs for the most part). Coastal vegetation with predominance of grasses, humid forest with an abundance of vertical strata, dense and varied undergrowth characterized by ferns, white palm and several species of anonaceous; Forests on hills, yolillales, constituted mainly by the yolillo palm and located in the central sector of the park, herbaceous marshes formed by herbaceous plants of up to 2 meters in height and herbaceous communities on lagoons with floating vegetation like the choreja or lily of water; Are some of the park’s most outstanding vegetable associations.
